11.1.17 Meeting Summary

The Central New York affiliate of NYS ASCD met at the NYSUT offices on November 1st, continuing with the theme of mental health that began last year.

Penny Williams and Jeannie Elmer from OCM BOCES introduced us to the Community Resiliency Model. Self-care is part of our job. Our focus is usually taking care of our students and staff at school and our families, but self-care is part of our job. We want to create our own self-care plan and create a culture in our schools of self-care. When we take care of ourselves, we are more resilient. In turn, this creates wider resilience zones. A resilient zone exists when we are well in mind, body, and spirit. When in a resilient zone, the decisions we make are usually better. This is the introductory video. When we experience trauma and stress, many aspects of our lives are impacted, such as behavior, relationships, physical conditions, our thoughts, etc. Being resilience-informed is different than being trauma-informed. The focus is not on the trauma and what happened. Rather, the focus is on today (and tomorrow), after the trauma. When this approach pervades the culture of a school or group, a community resiliency is achieved. Our resilience extends to the community.

Tammy Anderson, a CNY NYS ASCD member who was at the meeting recommended this TED video by pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris.

We also heard about NYS ASCD’s plan for a new website as well as hearing about the latest State Ed news.

The next meeting is January 17th at the Liverpool District Office, 195 Blackberry Road, Liverpool. The topic is: Mindsets (and What a School Can Do About Them).
